Costume Maker

Full time position: 40 hours per week.
Starting rate: based on experience.
Location: in-house, Stockport SK4 3EB

Costumes with Character is one of the world’s leading mascot and costume character manufacturers, creating bespoke characters for a wide variety of clients from all sectors including leisure, entertainment, sports, education, corporate, charities and many more across the globe.

The Costume Maker’s duties will include:

  • Constructing costume components using industrial machines and overlockers and using hand-finishing techniques.
    Cutting costumes, working with and adapting patterns.
  • Working with a variety of fabrics, faux furs, Lycra and foams.
  • Working closely with the whole creative team to achieve a quality product.
  • Following existing technical specifications and documenting construction methods for other makers to follow.
  • Working to agreed timeframes and short deadlines.
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a professional costume manufacturing environment. Excellent industrial sewing skills, straight stitch and overlocking alongside fine finishing and hand sewing.
  • A good understanding of patterns, garment construction and professional costume construction methods. Basic pattern-making skills would be an advantage. Attention to detail is essential.

The interview will require a short workshop skills test.

Trainee Prop Maker


Full time position: 40 hours/week
Starting rate: dependent on experience

Costumes with Character is one of the world’s leading mascot and costume character manufacturers, creating bespoke characters for a wide variety of clients from all sectors including leisure, entertainment, sports, education, corporate, charities and many more across the globe.

The Trainee Prop Maker’s duties will include:

  • Creating character heads and props which are an accurate representation of the design alongside being comfortable to wear, with good vision and ventilation.
  • Working to a high standard and within given timeframes using a range of tools and materials. Plastazote, ABS vac formed plastics, glues, foams, faux fur, Lycra etc.
  • Working closely with the whole creative team to achieve a quality product and expand on your creative skills.
  • Assisting with all costume repairs, fixing and creating solutions for costumes returned during our annual ‘Refurb Season’.
  • The ideal candidate will be a recent graduate of a costume/prop making or other creative course.
  • Cutting and sewing skills would be an advantage but not essential.

The interview will require a short workshop skills test.

Sewing Machinist

Full time position: 40 hours/week

The Sewing Machinist’s duties will include:

  • Constructing costume components using industrial machines and overlockers and using hand finishing techniques.
  • Working with a variety of fabrics, faux furs, Lycra and foams.
  • Working closely with the creative team to achieve a quality product.
  • Following existing technical specifications and documenting construction methods for other makers to follow.

  • Assisting in the Cutting department when required.
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a professional costume manufacturing environment. Excellent industrial sewing skills, straight stitch and overlocking alongside fine finishing, hand sewing, binding and applique.
  • A good understanding of patterns, garment construction and professional costume construction methods. Pattern making skills would be an advantage. Attention to detail is essential.

Freelance Prop Maker

Location: in-house, Stockport SK4 3EB and remote working options.

The Freelance Prop Maker’s duties will include:

  • Creating character heads and props which are an accurate representation of the design alongside being comfortable to wear, with good vision and ventilation.
  • Working to a high standard and within given timeframes using a range of tools and materials. Plastazote, ABS vac formed plastics, glues, foams, faux fur, Lycra etc.
  • Working closely with the whole creative team to achieve a quality product.
  • The ideal candidate will have 2+ years’ experience in the costume/prop making industries. Experience working with fur and Plastazote foam would be an advantage.
  • Cutting and sewing skills would be an advantage but not essential.

Props Room Manager

Full time position: 40 hours/week, negotiable.

Starting rate: dependent on experience

Location: In-house, Stockport SK4 and/or local remote working

Costumes with Character is one of the world’s leading mascot and costume character manufacturers, creating bespoke characters for a wide variety of clients from all sectors including leisure, entertainment, sports, education, corporate, charities and many more across the globe.

The Props Room Manager’s duties will include:

  • Managing the day-to-day workings of the Props Department and its 4 staff members, ensuring a quality product and efficient processes.
  • Attending planning meetings and working closely with other department heads.
  • Providing creative training for props staff members and monitor working timeframes.
  • Creating character heads and props which are an accurate representation of the design alongside being comfortable to wear, with good vision and ventilation.
  • Working to a high standard and within given timeframes using a range of tools and materials. Plastazote, ABS vac formed plastics, faux fur, Lycra etc.
  • Excellent skills in patterning with Plastazote foam and creating a 3D character from a 2D design essential.
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a professional prop/costume manufacturing environment and ideally some team management experience.
  • Good sculpting skills required.
  • Cutting and sewing skills would be an advantage.
